Abstract
The rapid expansion of digitally mediated childhood environments has fundamentally transformed the neurodevelopmental ecology of contemporary education. Children are increasingly growing within algorithmically driven ecosystems characterized by continuous screen exposure, hyperstimulation, reduced interpersonal interaction, and technology-mediated learning experiences. While digital technologies have expanded educational accessibility and innovation, emerging evidence suggests that excessive passive digital engagement may interfere with attentional regulation, emotional wellbeing, language acquisition, social reciprocity, symbolic play, sensory integration, and neuroplastic learning processes (Madigan et al., 2020; Radesky & Christakis, 2023). These concerns become particularly significant within inclusive educational ecosystems where neurodiverse learners may experience heightened vulnerability to overstimulating and interaction-deficient digital environments.
This white paper introduces the concept of the NeuroSovereign Child as a human-centered developmental framework emphasizing the protection of cognitive autonomy, emotional integrity, neuroplastic growth, and psychological wellbeing within increasingly algorithmic childhood ecosystems. Drawing upon contemporary literature from neuroscience, developmental psychology, inclusive education, neurodiversity research, and human-centered pedagogy between 2020 and 2026, the paper critically examines how digitally mediated learning environments may reshape childhood cognition, emotional regulation, social development, and learning behaviour. Using an IB oriented educational perspective informed by practice-based observations from an International School, the paper proposes the NeuroSovereign Learning Framework, an integrative model emphasizing balanced digital engagement, emotional reciprocity, inquiry-based learning, developmental protection, neurodiversity-sensitive pedagogy, and ethical educational technology governance.The paper argues that future-ready education must move beyond technology-centric efficiency models toward neuroscience informed, psychologically safe, and human-centered inclusive learning ecosystems capable of safeguarding developmental wellbeing in the age of algorithmic childhood
